Pulpit Podium

Pulpit Podium

The type of lectern used in a church is often referred to as a pulpit podium.

This is different from regular lecterns, which tend to be used in a lecture or business conference setting. The speaker in this case tends to stand still closely following their notes as they read. They may control a powerpoint presentation from a special control pad. The microphone is probably attached, so they will have to stay put!

A preacher using a pulpit podium however will tend to refer to notes or the bible, but will probably have a more dynamic style. The may gesture and wander back and forward across the stage as they speak. They will probably use a handheld mic, or a wireless and attached to a lapel or headset. There are ways to use a wireless mic on the top of a pulpit podium.

Another difference is that the regular business style lectern will probably stay put. Various speakers may come up onstage to speak from it, but since there is generally no praise and worship, there is no need for it to be cleared away. On the other hand, the pulpit podium will most likely be moved during the church service. In this situation, it is obviously better not to have any wires attached to the pulpit podium, since this makes it more difficult to move. In an extreme case, the cables could be damaged by attempting to move it when it was not properly detached, or there was not enough cable length.
