Trends in Church Furniture

The main trend in church furniture over the past 100 years appears to be an increase in portability.

A hundred years ago, church pews were attached to the floor, or at the very least large and difficult to move. The pulpit was often part of a column with steps leading up to it.

In contrast to traditional church pews, a trip to the Hillsong city church at one of their nine weekend services reveals seating being put out at a fast rate while the worship is going on. This is to cater for latecomers as they arrive.

The famous american furniture manufacturer Herman Miller was traditionally a church furniture maker (click to go to their site). While this company has moved from church furniture to office furniture, much church furniture has come to look like it is from an office or conference room. While the traditional pews are gone in many modern sanctuaries, the replacement for them does not really appear like special church furniture.

Fortunately the arc podium does not look like it belongs anywhere else. It has been specifically designed for stage use in a place of worship, where most preachers use a wireless microphone and so doesn't include any unnecessary wiring, lights etc. It is the ultimate in minimalist church furniture, with as little barrier as possible between the sermon and the ears to hear it.
